Save Punta Conejo

2019-06-25T19:42:56+00:00

¡Salvemos Punta Conejo!

Save The Waves is officially launching a campaign to protect Punta Conejo, a renowned surf break along the coastline of Southern Oaxaca, threatened by the construction of a new industrial port project.

TAKE ACTION NOW! SIGN THE PETITION.

The Issue: The Mexican Federal Government announced the “Development Plan for the Isthmus of Tehuantepec”, which includes the development of a new industrial port in Salina Cruz, Oaxaca.

SAVE PUNTA CONEJO IN SALINA CRUZ, OAXACA!

In December 2018 the Federal Government announced a development plan for the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, which considers the construction of a breakwater and a new industrial port in Salina Cruz, Oaxaca Mexico. This project as planned could potentially destroy the iconic wave and surrounding habitat of Punta Conejo.

Save the Waves Coalition and our partners recognize the importance of ports for commerce in Mexico, but are imploring the Federal Government not to authorize the construction of a port at this location, which would cause irreversible damage to the wave and ecosystem. We ask that the government explore alternatives that would not result in the destruction of this ecosystem and the economies that depend on it.

The proposed project will impact various natural areas including Playa Brazil, Playa Azul, Salinas del Marques Lagoon, and the surfing area known as Punta Conejo.

Although the President of Mexico has explained on several occasions that every project during his tenure would respect the history, culture and traditions of local communities and the environment, this project would destroy the wetlands and surrounding habitats with a direct impact to wildlife, the wave, and the local economy. Salinas del Marques, Playa Azul, and Playa Brazil are habitat for vulnerable species including the olive ridley and leatherback sea turtles and the local community depends on this ecosystem for fishing and salt production. With the construction of a new port in this area, the wetland would be destroyed.

Punta Conejo is an internationally recognized wave of excellent quality. It is the driver of tourism in the area with surfers coming from around the world to surf the point break. The development of a new port would have a direct impact on the quality of this public resource.

This petition asks the Federal Government to not approve the construction of a new industrial port in the area of Punta Conejo and explore alternatives that do not destroy the ecosystems and economies that depend on a healthy Punta Conejo.
